Mechanism of action

How does the active ingredient of the medication work?

The laxative effect is achieved by the active ingredient binding water after ingestion and transporting it into the large intestine.In the intestine itself, the increased concentration of macrogols attracts even more water in order to achieve a concentration balance between the inside and outside of the intestine.The resulting softening and increase in stool volume triggers a bowel movement reflexively through the dilation of the intestinal wall.

What are the reasons against using this medication?

Always:
- Hypersensitivity to the ingredients
- Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as:
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn's disease
- Megacolon (pathologically enlarged colon)
- Gastric or intestinal perforation or risk of perforation
- Intestinal obstruction
- Narrowing in the digestive tract
- Abdominal pain of unknown cause

Under certain circumstances - please consult your doctor or pharmacist:
- Impaired kidney function
- Impaired liver function

Which age group should be considered?
- Children under 8 years: The medication must not be used.

What about pregnancy and breastfeeding?
- Pregnancy: According to current knowledge, the medication has no harmful effects on the development of your child or on childbirth.
- Breastfeeding: According to current knowledge, there is no indication that the medication should not be used during breastfeeding.

If the medication has been prescribed to you despite a contraindication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.The therapeutic benefit may outweigh the risk associated with using the medication despite a contraindication.

Side effects

What undesirable effects can occur?

- Gastrointestinal complaints, such as:
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Painful urge to defecate
- Fecal incontinence (involuntary bowel movement)

What should you consider?
- Use laxative medications only for a short time without a doctor's recommendation.Longer-term use may lead to chronic constipation and/or other problems.If there is no improvement after short-term use, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
- Caution: Laxatives are not suitable for weight loss.
- Caution if you are allergic to the sweetener saccharin (E-number E 954)!
- Sulfites (E 220 - E 228) can cause hypersensitivity reactions and bronchospasm.
- There may be medications with which interactions occur.Therefore, before starting treatment with a new medication, you should generally inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications you are already taking.This also applies to medications that you buy yourself, only use occasionally, or whose use was some time ago.
