Melatonin is a hormone that is primarily produced by the brain in the pineal gland. The body makes it from serotonin, the synthesis being inhibited by light. Only when it gets dark during the night does the melatonin concentration rise to twelvefold. This applies to young people, with older people the concentration often only increases by a factor of three. The maximum will reached around 3 a.m., after which the concentration drops again. Little melatonin circulates in the blood during the day.

Melatonin helps me a lot when I have trouble falling asleep for an extended period; I take it then.My doctor advised me to take it for three weeks straight to achieve a good and lasting improvement.It worked well.People with thyroid problems should be careful and have their levels checked if they take it long-term!
