Melatonin is a hormone that is primarily produced by the brain in the pineal gland. The body makes it from serotonin, the synthesis being inhibited by light. Only when it gets dark during the night does the melatonin concentration rise to twelvefold. This applies to young people, with older people the concentration often only increases by a factor of three. The maximum will reached around 3 a.m., after which the concentration drops again. Little melatonin circulates in the blood during the day.

Melatonin helps me a lot; if I have trouble falling asleep for a long time, I take it. My doctor advised me to take it for 3 weeks at a time in order to achieve good and lasting improvement. It worked well. People with thyroid problems should be careful and have their levels checked if they take it long-term!

The small capsules are very pleasant to take, the active ingredient is proven and well tolerated. For a long time, the active ingredient was and is a "hit" in the USA - here in Germany, the drug was a long time coming in non-prescription form. But now "common sense" has prevailed".
