Constipation: When the intestines are too sluggish
Constipation is not uncommon. Approximately one in four people in Germany is plagued by digestive problems at least occasionally. Constipation – the medical term for constipation – occurs when bowel movements occur less than three times a week and bowel movements are only possible with strong straining. The causes of constipation can be varied: Most often, the symptoms are caused by a low-fiber diet, lack of exercise, or insufficient fluid intake. Due to its mode of action, sodium picosulfate has proven itself to be widely used for constipation and other conditions requiring easier bowel movements. The active ingredient sodium picosulfate exerts its effect in the large intestine. There, the drug is chemically converted into its active form by intestinal bacteria and subsequently inhibits water absorption from the intestine. At the same time, it promotes the release of water and minerals, making the stool more fluid and increasing stool volume. This stimulates bowel movement and supports natural bowel function. The laxative effect usually occurs after 10 to 12 hours if taken in the evening.

Thanks to its dosage form as drops, the laxative can be easily and individually dosed. The medicine is suitable for children 4 years and older. Sodium picosulfate AL 7.5 mg/ml drops are intended for short-term use only and should not be taken for long periods.

RECOMMENDED USE:
Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor
• Adults take 10 to 20 drops (equivalent to 5 to 10 mg sodium picosulfate)
• Children 4 years and older take 5 to 10 drops (equivalent to 2.5 to 5 mg sodium picosulfate).

It is recommended to start with the lowest dosage. The dose can be adjusted up to the maximum dose to ensure regular bowel movements. The maximum daily dose of 20 drops (for adults) or 10 drops (for children 4 years and older) must not be exceeded. Sodium picosulfate AL drops are best taken in the evening. The drops can be taken with or without liquid. The effect usually occurs after 10 to 12 hours.

Note: Sodium picosulfate AL drops should not be taken continuously every day or for extended periods without determining the cause of constipation.

More fiber
For good digestion, a high-fiber diet is generally recommended. These valuable nutrients are abundant in fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, and legumes. In cases of constipation, flaxseed, wheat bran, or psyllium husks can further stimulate bowel activity. Due to their strong swelling ability, the stool swells, becomes more slippery, and can pass through the digestive tract more easily. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, otherwise constipation can worsen.

More exercise
Regular physical activity can stimulate a sluggish bowel. Peak athletic performance is not required. Even moderate activities such as brisk walking, light jogging, cycling, or gymnastics can make a decisive difference. Less stress
Stress can quickly affect digestion. When there is time pressure, going to the bathroom is often delayed and the urge to defecate is suppressed. What should I bear in mind when taking sodium picosulfate 7.5 mg/ml drops?
Sodium picosulfate AL 7.5 mg/ml drops should not be taken
• if you are allergic to sodium picosulfate, related active ingredients from the triarylmethane group, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• in cases of intestinal narrowing with impaired intestinal transit or intestinal obstruction (ileus)
• in cases of severe acute abdominal pain with or without fever (e.g., appendicitis), possibly associated with nausea and vomiting
• in cases of acute inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
• in cases of significant dehydration
• by children under 4 years of age.

Constipation, combined with other symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever, may be a sign of a serious illness (intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal inflammation). If you experience such symptoms, you should not take sodium picosulfate AL drops or any other medication and should consult your doctor immediately.

If you have conditions associated with disturbances in water and mineral salt balance (e.g., severely impaired kidney function), you should only take sodium picosulfate AL 7.5 mg/ml drops under medical supervision.
