Nelken buds come from the cloven tree, which was originally native to the molukk. The climbing tree is up to 10 meters high; Gewürznelke has been known as a spice in Europe since the Middle Ages. Nelken buds are picked by hand before blooming. They are used as a spice in Christmas biscuits and curry mixes. In naturopathy they are used for oral care and in the event of cold and digestive complaints.
