The intake of food in newborns with a cleft lip, jaw or palate is almost always associated with considerable problems: it is usually not possible for them to generate the intraoral negative pressure necessary for sucking. Both breastfeeding itself and bottle feeding with commercially available teats is therefore very difficult or often not possible. NUK has developed special teats for these children, which are based on the specific anatomical-morphological conditions of the alveolar region of cleft wearers. The NUK cleft lip suction device was developed as a suction aid for unilateral (one-sided) clefts with an inserted palate plate, but can also be used in exceptional cases for bilateral (two-sided) clefts with an inserted palate plate. Form and function are aligned with the NUK teat and do not have the character of a prosthesis. The oral cavity is closed off from the environment by covering the outer gap area, so that an intraoral negative pressure can be generated in the oral cavity.
