The common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a plant species of the genus horse chestnut (Aesculus) native to the Balkans and widespread in Central Europe. The tree can reach a height of up to 30 m and an age of 300 years. From the middle of the 17th century, cinchona bark was used in Europe to treat intermittent fever. However, since the bark was very expensive at the time, a substitute with a similar effect was sought. During this search, it was discovered that the horse chestnut, which was already native at the time, can have a similar effect if used correctly, which is why it was used accordingly over the next few decades. The most important active ingredient in the horse chestnut is aescin, which is a mixture of more than 30 different saponins. Aescin has a vascular strengthening, anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory effect. This can be achieved, among other things, by sealing the vascular walls of the veins, with their permeability being modified in order to reduce the outflow of liquid into the tissue and to accelerate the drainage of water deposits from the tissue. In addition, horse chestnut can strengthen the immune system, improve physical well-being, maintain healthy skin and protect against substances that irritate the stomach. The fight against blood accumulation in the extremities due to the venotrophic effects of aescin has been analyzed in more detail in various studies.1,2 A reduction in leg swelling and varicose veins was also observed in these studies with horse chestnut extract intake.1,2
