Dietary supplements with selenium

Selenium is an essential trace element and is therefore one of the minerals that must be consumed daily through food to maintain the body's supply.
Selenium was discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius, who named it "Selene" after the Greek moon goddess.
Selenium is found primarily in herring, tuna, sardines, soybeans, whole wheat bread, liver, beef, pork, cod, salmon, sole, white beans, and dairy products.
Despite the abundant food supply, the supply of selenium is not always guaranteed.
In Germany and large parts of Europe, selenium intake levels and the selenium status of the population are considered suboptimal. Germany is one of the most selenium-poor countries in Central Europe, where soil leaching is prevalent and the trace element is insufficient in arable land. Due to this low selenium content in our soils, selenium is one of the critical nutrients even in a strictly vegetarian diet.
The thyroid is our "most selenium-rich" organ. High amounts of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidases are found in the thyroid. These antioxidant enzymes protect tissue from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Thus, throughout the body, cellular components are also broken down by selenium-dependent enzymes (such as Glutathione peroxidases) protect against oxidative stress and the associated cell damage caused by radicals.
A good supply of selenium supports the innate and adaptive immune system and also helps to curb excessive immune reactions. Selenium is also involved in the maintenance of hair and nails.
