Zinc – the second most common trace element in the body

The zinc stores in the human organism are relatively small, only 2-3 grams of zinc are stored by the body. However, the trace element is essential for life, but cannot be produced by the body itself. We depend on a continuous supply, since numerous enzymes in the body need zinc for their function. Zinc is a true all-rounder. It is important for the immune system, cell division, protein synthesis, for the maintenance of skin, hair and nails and also for various metabolic processes.

A secure zinc supply is a challenge

According to the National Consumption Study II***, 32% of men and 21% of women do not reach the recommended daily zinc intake. Men and women aged 65 and over have the highest proportion (44% and 27%, respectively). Although some foods contain zinc, only 10-40% of it can be absorbed from food. The recording is very variable and dependent on many factors. Phytic acid, which is mainly found in legumes and grains, can inhibit zinc absorption, which is particularly important for vegetarians and vegans who eat a lot of it.
